DDM cannot be used either because it uses the direction of transmission to separate channels, while the channels to be separated are transmitted in the same direction. SDM and DDM are duplexing techniques and not true multiplexing techniques. Duplexing techniques that separate the channels using optical wavelengths, pseudorandom modulation of an electronic carrier (CDM), electronic spectra, and time intervals can be used for both duplexing and multiplexing. CDM will not be considered further, because it is even less well suited to multiplexing than it is to duplexing, since very-high-speed components are needed, as it cannot be simplified in the same way as for two-channel operation.
The downstream transmission can be relatively simple, since the OLT can broadcast a multiplexed signal to all of the ONUs, which can then select their relevant channels. Achieving bidirectional (duplex) operation on a single fiber is slightly more difficult, because a technique to distinguish between the directions of transmission is required. Coordinating the multiplexing of the upstream transmission from all of the ONUs to the OLT is a little harder again.
