The processes that we have examined do not constitute the true unity of history. It has unity of a more subtle and tougher kind as the following chapters, I hope, will show. Conclusion History is a unity. First, it is like a family a family of people connected by blood, by upbringing, by interdependence, and by common concern. We may not always like our parents, children, siblings and so on, but they are part of us. Moreover, although individuals come and go, the family continues. Second, the word 'history' has two meanings the deeds of that family and the record of those deeds.
In this one we consider how 'the minds of men' and women bring about those 'alterations in the world' which are the concern of the historian.
