The house is in a flood plain, so it is raised on footings, and one wall is made of old tires filled with dirt and covered in chicken wire and cement. The students took their cue from the much-photographed Yancey Chapel (1995), also called the tire chapel, in Sawyerville. Much of the Shiles House is clad in oak shingles cut from used shipping pallets. For the roof, the students cut up leftover insulated door panels.
